I Made My *Paid* Newsletter *Free* - This is Why

In April 2024, I had this idea for a newsletter I knew needed to exist.

Butโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ‘ถ I had just come back from a few months on parental leave.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ I had some work, but zero childcare.

Time was more limited than Iโ€™d ever experienced before.

I couldnโ€™t justify adding more to my plate.
Not unless the shiny new thing proved it was completely *worth my time*.

So I ran a demand test:

- Would people pay to get fast and actionable guidances on using AI in customer research?
- Was it enough to send one set of bite-sized help once per month?

YES and YES.

The results were better than I imagined.
- It built deep, high-trust relationships with early subscribers
- It turned into my highest-converting product

My first follow-up post about the results got many 1000โ€™s of impressions and new signups. ๐Ÿ‘‡

 

Itโ€™s one full year laterโ€ฆ

I hit a point in April when I realized it had been a whole year since my demand test and Edition #1.

One voice in my head kept saying, โ€œThis thing is a cash cow! It converts to my courses and corporate trainings at a significantly higher rate than any free newsletter I've ever seen!โ€

But there was another voice back there, saying:

โ€My ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐˜† has ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฑ. Iโ€™m not where I was at that time anymore.โ€

I took a hard look at the pieces of my business.

I pushed myself to identify what Iโ€™m actually trying to achieve - whatโ€™s the GOAL here?

I realized I no longer need the newsletter to earn revenue.

I need it to ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—œ๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—”๐—œ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ต.

There was only one option in the end:

But my goal hasnโ€™t changed:
